It’s October, and you know what that means? PUMPKIN EVERYTHING.
I remember when this craze first started taking over, I was excited for it. I’ve always loved pumpkin spice or pumpkin flavored things. After all, since I was a kid Fall and Halloween has been my favorite time of year.
There’s a drawback to this, though. As companies rush to meet the demand of a new trend, the quality of the items suffer. Some of them will just toss “pumpkin” or “pumpkin spice” into or onto something, and the results aren’t always great. With pumpkin spice in particular, I’ve been disappointed more than a few times with the product at hand. Some never seem to quite capture the real essence of what pumpkin spice is supposed to taste like, usually making it way too processed or artificial, and thus missing the point of using a very homemade flavor.
Yet, over the years, I still try to get down on as much pumpkin spice foods as possible, and I have found a few that I like.
In no particular order…..
1. Pumpkin Bread from Starbucks.
We all know about the Pumpkin Spice latte, I’m pretty sure it’s the originator of this craze. I don’t need to tell you it’s good, because I personally love it. However, what doesn’t seem to get as much love is their pumpkin loaf. It’s super moist, rich, a little sweet and a little spicy, and perfect on a Fall morning. Definitely get one with your next latte.
2. Little Debbie Pumpkin Delights
These little guys are amazing. Looking at them, you wouldn’t expect much (and I didn’t at first) but they really pack a punch, especially in terms of the “spice” in “pumpkin spice”. The pumpkin jam inside really balances out the cookie, and you’re left with a perfect little Autumn snack.
3. Hostess Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes
This was another one that surprised me. I believe they’re new for 2015, and though I was skeptical, they became my new favorite Pumpkin Spice snack. As strange as it is, they remind me a lot of another spicy cake – carrot cake , which is a total win in my book.
4. Woodchuck Pumpkin Cider
Pumpkin has taken over the realm of adult beverages as well. This time of year, you can’t go into a liquor store without seeing about a million variations of pumpkin beer. However, as a fan of cider (Woodchuck’s in particular) I enjoyed the lighter, yet still pumpkin-y flavor of this drink. It’s perfect to kick back with a cold one and watch a scary movie, or sit out by a fire.
5. Pumpkin Spice Hersey’s Kisses
Just enough spice with a nice creamy center, what more do you need? I keep these in a candy dish in my living room during this time of year because they’re pretty addictive. The other benefit is they go great in homemade desserts, and you can find a ton of recipes online that utilize them. I put them on top of some homemade pumpkin snickerdoodles and it added an extra spicy and creamy umph to the cookie,
So that’s my little list of favs, and I’m sure there’s plenty more I haven’t gotten around to trying yet. Leave your suggestions in the comments!
